Audubon Lights Out For The Birds!

Over 250 species of birds migrate through Dayton. Birds migrate at night and can be drawn off their flight path by lit structures. Many birds drop from exhaustion after circling brightly lit buildings, reluctant to fly out of the light.  You can help by dimming, shielding, or eliminating excess lighting outside and inside, especially upper floors from midnight until dawn during March 15 to May 31 for the spring migration.

Lights Out is a voluntary program developed by the National Audubon Society to ensure that unnecessary lighting is turned off at certain times of the year. A blackout is not required.

Dayton will do everything possible to support the Lights Out Minnesota initiative for bird migration while continuing to prioritize safety.
