Public Data Requests
Submit a Written Request
While you are not required to use a specific form, a written request helps us respond accurately and promptly. You may submit your request via mail, email, or by using our online form.

Your request should include the following information:
- Reference the MGDPA. State that you are making a request under the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 13.
- Describe the data. Provide a clear and specific description of the data you want to inspect or copy. This helps prevent misunderstandings.
- Specify your preference. Clearly state whether you wish to:
- Inspect the data in person.
- Receive electronic copies.
- Receive paper copies.
- Provide contact information. Include a way for us to contact you with questions or to provide the data, such as a phone number, email address, or mailing address. You are not required to provide your name or a reason for the request.
Upon receiving your request, the City will:
- If the data is public, we will provide access within a reasonable time.
- If the requested data is not public, or contains both public and non-public data, we will withhold the non-public data and provide any public data that remains. We will inform you of the legal basis for withholding or redacting the data.
- If we do not have the data, we will inform you of that fact within a reasonable time.
