Sewer Department
Sewer Department Overview
Dayton has constructed a Sanitary sewer system as the City has developed. The system is currently divided into segments serving the North West (Historic Village) the North East and South Dayton. There is a combination of 10 Lift stations, Force mains and gravity feed to transport the material for treatment along the pipe infrastructure to the waste water treatment plant. Treatment is managed by Otsego and the Metropolitan Council.
The City maintains the Infrastructure which involves jetting and cleaning lift stations, and pipe infrastructure to prevent blockages in the system. The pumps are inspected once a year for maintenance. The whole system is managed by a SCADA system which alerts staff remotely if there are problems with the System. The City currently owns 2 mobile generators to hook up to lift stations in case of an Electrical outage and a Vac Truck in case of extreme emergencies.

Protect Our Sewer System – Think Before You Flush
To help maintain the integrity of the City’s sanitary sewer system, we kindly remind residents not to flush the following items:
-
"Flushable" wipes
-
Wet wipes and baby wipes
-
Facial tissues
-
Feminine hygiene products
Although some of these products are labeled as flushable, they do not break down like toilet paper and can accumulate over time. This buildup can clog lift station pumps, cause them to overheat, and ultimately lead to pump failure.
Such failures may result in serious consequences, including raw sewage backups into homes or sewage overflows from lift stations into streets. These issues can also affect private septic systems, leading to costly repairs and environmental harm.
Your cooperation helps protect public health, the environment, and the City's infrastructure. Thank you for doing your part.
