Code Enforcement
Ordinance enforcement in the City of Dayton is conducted on a complaint-basis. As a result, action is generally initiated by an officer only after a code violation has been reported by a community member. Below you will find information regarding some of the most common violations that the city receives complaints about.
Property Maintenance
Grass and weeds that grow taller than 8 inches are among the most common violations.
Weeds or grass, excluding natural prairie grasses, in excess of 8 inches in length, in certain zoning districts is a public nuisance and is prohibited. Dayton City Code chapter 1001.24 Subd. 10 explains which districts this requirement this applies to.
Dayton City Code chapter 130 prohibits the accumulation of garbage, refuse, and other materials in yards. Property owners are responsible for maintaining their premises to avoid unsanitary or unsightly conditions that could lead to a complaint.

Vehicle and Parking Violations
Parking on streets in the City of Dayton is prohibited between the hours of 2 am and 6 am without permit. Permits will be issued for passenger vehicles only. Permits are not valid for commercial vehicles, RV’s, boats, trailers, etc. The Chief of Police may, at times, allow an exception depending on vehicle, location and legth of time requestor is wishing to park.
Vehicles must be currently licensed and operable to be on the roadways. On private property, vehicles, at a minimum, must have current registration. Unregistered or junk cars parked outside an enclosed building are a frequently reported violation.
Parking large and/ or commercial vehicles in residential neighborhoods is prohibited. Vehicles may temporarily park while performing a service or delivery but are not permitted to stay overnight on the street without a police-issued exception.

Public Health and Safety
Improperly stored or scattered trash, as well as containers being left out on the curb for too long, are regularly reported. Dayton City Code chapter 130.02 provides definitions as to what defines, garbage, rubbish, refuse and refuse containers, and waste matter. Chapter 130 also explains what what consitutes violation. Loud noises from music, vehicles, equipment like chainsaws and lawn mowers outside of permitted hours are often reported. Dayton City Code chapter 130.08 provides information about what constitutes a noise violation.

Zoning Violations
Operating a business out of a residential home without the proper permits or in violation of zoning regulations is a common issue. If you suspect an illegal home business you can contact City Hall and speak with the City Planner.
Many code violations in the city involve construction, remodeling, etc. (such as sheds, fences, or additions)that does not have the required permits. Refer to Dayton City Code Chapter 1001.28, Subd. 4, for building permit requirements.
