Holiday Safety Tips

With the holiday season fast approaching, we are writing to remind everyone to be extra vigilant and take proactive steps to prevent thefts from vehicles and stolen packages from our doorsteps. Unfortunately, opportunistic crime tends to increase during this time of year, and by working together, we can protect our community and belongings.

Tips for preventing thefts from vehicles:

  • Remove valuables: Never leave  valuable items visible inside your vehicle. Even loose change can attract a thief.
  • Park smart: Whenever possible, park in a well-lit, visible area. If you have a garage, use it.
  • Lock up: Always roll up your windows and lock your doors, even if you are only stepping away for a moment. Do not leave your keys or a spare key in your vehicle.
  • Hide accessories: Take time to hide or remove electronic accessories such as charging cords, brackets, and suction cups, which signal that a device might be hidden in your car.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: If you are loading shopping bags into your car, be aware that thieves may be watching parking lots for opportunities.

Tips for preventing holiday package theft (porch piracy):

  • Track your deliveries: Use tracking notifications from delivery companies (USPS, FedEx, UPS) to know when your packages are scheduled to arrive.
  • Retrieve promptly: Bring packages inside as soon as they are delivered. If you can't be home, arrange for a trusted neighbor or family member to pick up the package for you.
  • Ship to a secure location: Consider shipping to a location other than your home. Most retailers have other options available. You can also ship to an address where someone is always available to receive the package.
  • Require a signature: For high-value items, request that a signature be required upon delivery. This prevents the package from being left unattended.
  • Use security technology: Invest in a video doorbell or security camera to monitor your front door and deter potential thieves. Motion-activated lights can also scare off criminals.

What to do if you see something suspicious:

The most important step we can take as a community is to be vigilant and report suspicious activity. If you notice any individuals or vehicles that seem out of place, please report it to our local authorities immediately. Do not confront the individuals directly.

By taking these small but important precautions, we can significantly reduce our risk and help ensure a safe and happy holiday season for everyone.
